A Lombard Legacy
The construction of the Cathedral dates back to the Lombards, connected to Queen Theodelinda, who according to legend had a chapel built at the spot indicated to her by a dove in a dream. This small building became the nucleus of the present Cathedral.
The Monza Cathedral was built in 595 and later expanded in the 14th century with the impressive three-nave structure we see today. The bell tower, added in 1500, still dominates the city skyline.
One of the most fascinating places in the Cathedral is the Chapel of Theodelinda, also known as the Zavattari Chapel, decorated with 45 frescoes depicting the queen’s life and the miracles associated with the basilica’s construction.
Inside the chapel is the Iron Crown, a symbol of imperial power. Used to crown sovereigns such as Charlemagne, Frederick Barbarossa, and Napoleon, it is adorned with precious stones and contains, according to tradition, an iron band forged from a nail used in the crucifixion of Jesus.
In the underground chambers of the majestic Monza Cathedral, visitors can admire the prestigious Museum and Treasury of the Cathedral, guardian of extraordinary historical artifacts. Among the treasures are the votive cross that belonged to Agilulf, husband of Queen Theodelinda, the famous Diptych of Stilicho, and the elegant Hen with Chicks, a masterpiece of Lombard goldsmithing.
