A dreamlike journey in the Chagall’s etchings

From the 4th September the French naturalized Byelorussian artist arrives in Monza, at Musei Civici, for a real journey in his dreamlike imagination, between the prosperity of the Russian literary tradition and the sacredness of the Bible.

Showed until the 6th January in two exhibition spaces, Arengario and Casa degli umiliati, “Chagall, la grafica del sogno” presents for the first time the three most important completed graphic series of the Russian artist, the trilogy made up of Dead Souls by Gogol’, Fables by La Fountaine and the Bible. Furthermore, there are also two rare editions of Seven Capital Sins and Maternity.

The three cycles are composed by more than 300 etchings, which constitute a corpus that is already considered inseparable: the artist indeed fulfills a circular journey, starting from a consideration around human meanness in Dead Souls’ boards, continuing through the nature with its beauty and its early track in Fables and returning to man in the Bible, this time lightened by the God’s reality.

The exhibition itinerary

Arengario will be the perfect “beginning” for “Chagall, la grafica del sogno”. Here you can find the section dedicated to Fables, a path into a fantastic world, characterized by mythological traits. Here the attention is focused in particular on children, with a set-up thought exactly for them, in order to have a more direct and immediate approach.

Beside the engravings of Fables, there are also the Bible’s etchings, which have involved the artist not only from an artistic point of view, but also from the moral one. His engravings concern especially the figures of the Patriarchs and of the Prophets, around whom animals play an important role.

“Chagall, la grafica del sogno” continues in the section of Musei Civici in Monza – Casa degli Umilisti, where it will be possible to appreciate the engravings of the cycle of Dead Souls. Gogol’s romance becomes the occasion to tell some aspects of the Russian culture from which even the artist had gradually taken distance.
